Texas linebacker Anthony Hill Jr., the Longhorns’ leading tackler and one of the SEC’s top defensive players, suffered a broken bone in his hand during Saturday’s 35–10 defeat to Georgia.

The injury was reported by Horns247 insider Chip Brown, who shared the following update:

Hill appeared shaken up after a tackle with about 11 minutes left in the fourth quarter. He briefly left the field before returning on Georgia’s next possession and finished with six tackles, a half tackle for loss and an interception that helped spark Texas’ only touchdown of the game.

Hill will meet with specialists early this week, which will determine whether he can play in Texas’ final two regular-season games against Arkansas and Texas A&M.

Texas coach Steve Sarkisian declined to give specifics after the game but said Monday he “feels optimistic” about Hill’s outlook as well as the status of wide receiver Ryan Wingo, who is dealing with a thumb injury.

Hill, a junior from Denton Ryan, leads the Longhorns in tackles, forced fumbles and interceptions. His production has made him a semifinalist for both the Bednarik Award and the Butkus Award.

If Hill is sidelined, linebackers Liona Lefau and Ty’Anthony Smith will carry an increased load. Smith led Texas with nine tackles in the loss.

The first SEC injury report of the week on Wednesday should provide a clearer indication of Hill’s availability moving forward.
